Local 590 was organized in 1969 in response to an iniquitous working environment at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. We are affiliated with District Council 47 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Through the years we have secured our jobs, maintained fair compensation for our work, enhanced benefits and protected our dignity as employees of the university.

We are proud to be a democratic local, in a democratic district council and international union.
