American Friends Service Committee

AFSC Building

The Union’s Health and Safety Committee met with Jerry Roseman, an industrial hygienist, to educate the union committee members on what to watch out for while the AFSC is renovating 1501 Cherry Street, for the purpose of making it fossil fuel free building.

The Union’s Health and Safety Committee will be meeting to review our concerns and schedule a walk-through of the building once AFSC begins the renovations. The union coordinating committee has been meeting to stay abreast with AFSC management while they contemplate restructuring various departments and positions. Many members of the union’s coordinating committee have volunteered to serve on transitional AFSC committees, to ensure proper representation from the rank-and-file workforce.

Jewish Community Centers

The Board of Directors of the JCC’s met to determine the future of the Agency. At this meeting, it was the sense of the board, that in order for the JCC’s to survive, they will have to decentralize the branches. Therefore, within the next two years, the Klien Branch and the Kaiserman Branch will become two separate organizations.

Our labor contract expires with the JCC’s on September 15, 2009. We may have to negotiate two separate bargaining agreements or one that covers both branches.

The union did have a situation at the Kaiserman Branch
where management wanted to displace bargaining unit workers with subcontractors. The union demanded that the JCC’s negotiate this change and was successful by not allowing any bargaining unit employees to be displaced. The union also negotiated a no contracting out clause with the JCC’s for the remainder of this contract.

Jewish Employment & Vocational Services

With the leadership of Caldwell Grant (Local Vice- President), JEVS has redesigned the rehabilitation program up at Ashton Road. Thanks to Vice-President Grant, all of the staff of the rehabilitation program will be assigned within the new program with some employees receiving a bump in salary.
We will be having shop steward elections at all of our JEVS sites and programs. We need to accomplish this before the end of February, so that we can start preparing for our upcoming contract negotiations.
Congratulations to the following individuals who in accordance with Article 6 section 1(i) of the union contract, received a bonus check for ten days pay for perfect attendance for 2007:

Mike Gifoli Caldwell Grant Robert Herrmann
Laura Logan Laura Logan Grigority Moldavskiy
Larry Talbert Rita Starlin-Taylor Rachel Ziring

Jewish Family & Children’s Service

The union and management will sign the new collective bargaining agreement in the near future and distribute it to our union members in January. The union will be meeting with management about the reduction of the union’s billing position that JFCS has been attempting to eliminate.
