In Memoriam

On February 14, 2008, Local 810 lost a 21
year veteran hearing officer from Domestic
Relations at 34 South 11th St.  Mark An-
thony Burems was born on October 30,
1960 and was a graduate of West Chester
University and had his Master’s degree from
Temple University.
Mark was the youngest
of eight children and
the first to pass away.
He will be terribly
missed by his family,
friends and co-workers.

Mark had been sick for
some time and al-
though he had approxi-
mately 80 days in his
sick bank, had been
disciplined for taking
time and racking up
“occurrences”.  Sadly,
he did not know that he
would have had only
one “occurrence” for one health reason.  As a result, each time he took off he got yet an-

other “occurrence” and was called on the carpet
after these “occurrences” built up.

On the day Mark died, he came to work ex-
tremely ill.  He was due to be suspended if he
took off another day.  Mark collapsed at work and
was rushed to the hospital where he passed

                      away later that evening.

                      On Friday, April 25th, 2008,
                      Mark along with others will
                      be honored by the Philadel-
                      phia Area Project on Occu-
                      pational Safety and Health
                      (Philaposh) and the Philadel-
                      phia County Central Labor
                      Council, AFL-CIO at their
                      Workers’ Memorial Day
                      Ceremony.  The breakfast
will be held at the Sheet
                      Metal Workers Hall on 1301
                      S. Columbus Blvd. and the
                      cost is $45.00 per person.
                      Anyone interested in attend-
ing can contact Louise Carpino, President, Local
810, 215-740-9695.

Non-FMLA  Sick Leave Policy

For several years, Local 810 has been trying to get Human Resources to commit to paper the
procedures for taking/reporting/recording non-FMLA sick leave.  Although some employees
understood the concept of “one health condition” equals  “one ongoing occurrence”, not all did
since instructions were merely passed around by word of mouth.  In an effort to prevent any further
tragic consequences, Local 810 finally submitted a list of procedures and asked for Human
Resources to approve their list.  After tweaking it a bit, Human Resources responded and Local
810 now has an FJD approved set of procedures for taking/reporting/recording non-FMLA sick
time.
